long term rationale
Holding Rationale for MSFT.
MSFT is a long term core position for me, and in the past 3 months I've loaded up with an out-sized position in anticipation of the eventual rebound of the tech sector. In my opinion, MSFT has a great underlying business with additional near term catalysts. It's like a heavy gauge coil spring that is being compressed.
Long term case:
(1) The windows and office business lines are terrific monopoly franchises that show no sign of abating. Don't believe the StarOffice or Google apps case for loss of dominance for the app layer, they have a loooong way to go before I'd ever foresee enterprise IT groups going with them.
(2) Cash flow from #1 gives MSFT unparalleled ability to invest in future cash cows, like XBox and online. Ballmer has shown great patience at sticking with XBox thru its dark days and that bet now appears to be paying off. I have no doubt that MSFT will show the same determination with virtualization technologies, SaaS for enterprises, and other hot sectors where they're naturally positioned to play. IPTV may be the next long term bet that begins to convert into a cash cow franchise.
