I understand value investing. In the long run it is a great thesis. But sometimes when a tsunami is heading to shore it is ok to head for higher land. That is why I stepped aside with the UEIC, which is now trading about 10% lower than when I stepped out of it. Not because it wasn't a great value, not because the fundamentals had failed, but simply because my own 'trading system' was telling me to preserve my capital.
In a market that moves randomly up and down, it is wise to jump in whenever it is down. But sometimes their are major moves that can, like a tsunami, slam an investor who wishes to just buy the dips because they are great values.
I hope that I am wrong. That the market will turn on a dime and head higher, but the illness does not appear to be a mild case of influenza. This market is instead needing life support in the name of the Federal Reserve pumping billions into Bear Stearns and the like.
Thanks for this great website!
