The City That Never Sleeps

Ah, New York.  Although the feeling of not wanting to leave a nice vacation, or feeling like you want to stay just a few more days is common, I tend to feel it a little bit more than most people.  This trip to New York City was no different.  Although the purpose of the trip was to attend a game at Yankee Stadium one last time, I also got to see some parts of the city that I didn’t remember (and didn’t appreciate) from my last trip to the city in the summer of 2004

Shea Stadium

We arrived at lunchtime on Tuesday, took a bus to Manhattan and then the B train to the hotel.  If you have been to New York City, you already know that the rooms are about the size of a lunchbox (that might be a little generous).  From the rooms to the sidewalks to the blocks to the city as a whole, every square inch of space is used in Manhattan.  Our hotel room was extremely small, but just steps from Central Park.  Whoa; don’t get me started on Central Park.  In my opinion, it’s an incredible place.  If I had to describe New York vs. Chicago in one word, it would be scale.  While Chicago has Millenium and Grant Park, NYC has Central Park, which is probably twice as big as both Chi-town parks combined.  Chicago has busy Michigan Avenue, while NYC has about a hundred Michigan Avenues.  Chicago has a large number of high rises, while NYC has about a thousand, atleast one on every block.  Comparing the cities is pointless and impossible for me, as I love Chicago (as I’ve said here a thousand times before).  They are very different, yet share the same “feel”.  When I am in Chicago, I feel a certain excitement and importance.  Same goes for New York.  But I won’t bore you any longer: here are some pictures.

When I went to NYC in 2004, I got to see Mariano Rivera close out a game.  Luckily, I got to see him pitch again this time around.  I can’t imagine what it must have felt like watching him in his prime when they team was winning multiple World Series rings.  Bobby Abreu ended up doubling home Derek Jeter for another Yankees win.

It was a quick but great trip.  You could feel the history at Yankee Stadium.  Hopefully I will get back to see the new Yankee Stadium and the city soon.  I recommend you do the same.
