i may be premature here dipping my toes into financials. AXP got spanked pretty hard for revealing what we already knew: people are having trouble paying their bills. i looked at the charts over many different time periods, looked at the financials, looked at the investors who hold shares, and thought about the overall economic picture. i think i am in at a good price if we experience a quick short downturn here. if it is a more protracted and painful one, i think my downside risk is limited. i reserve the right to change my mind on a dime though ;-)

well, not quite that negligent in the due diligence department. there are a lot of reasons to own ebay right now i think, although the tiffany lawsuit is definitely casting a shadow at the moment. and if the economy really tanks then the story might not make sense, but my thesis is that auctions are popular when people are feeling pinched. they look for cheaper alternatives to buying retail, and they head out to the garage to unload all the crap they bought when they refi'ed.

moving to dividends, as a move towards safety. the large weighting of finance companies in this ETF worries me a little in this climate, but the sector has been hammered pretty well already, and it looks like no one company represents much more than 2% of the holdings. the chart looked good as well. and phil pointed this one out http://www.philstockworld.com/2007/08/22/wild-wednesday-morning-3/

based this purchase on the fundamentals, the projections for dividend growth, and the fact that i have read about it in a lot of disparate places as a company to own.

or at least that is what they say. the long term trend for water industries is up. i haven't delved into the specific companies in the sector, but in the meantime i am exposed with this ETF and CGW as well.
